Bone Mineral Density (BMD / DEXA)

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing, also referred to as a DEXA (or dual energy x-ray absorptiometry), is an x-ray procedure that measures the density of your bones. As we age, our bones naturally become thinner, less dense and more prone to injury. Early detection of the loss of bone mass is critical, as loss can often happen without any signs or symptoms until a fracture (break) of the bone occurs.

The results of BMD testing will help your doctor to determine the strength of your bones. A BMD test diagnoses osteoporosis (reduction in density of bone), shows the effectiveness of treatment for osteoporosis, and assesses the risk of developing fractures. The results are graphed and compared to a population at peak bone mass (young normal), as well a population that is matched to your age and gender.

When you arrive at MMI for your BMD test, you will be asked to complete a history form. You will then be required to lie still on an imaging table while an x-ray scanner passes slowly over you. We will measure the bone density in both your hip and lower spine. The amount of radiation used is minimal and is considered to be very safe.  For duration & test preparation instructions, please see instructions here.

“High Risk” Factors for BMD Testing

  • Treatment for osteoporosis

  • Height loss of 0.75 inches or 1.9 cm

  • Rapid bone loss risk factors (chemotherapy / rheumatoid arthritis)

  • Low body mass (<125 lbs or <57 kg)

  • Fragility fractures

  • Glucocorticoid therapy x 3 months or greater (i.e. prednisone)

  • Hyperparathyroidism

  • Early menopause (<45 years old)

  • Hypogonadism

  • Malabsorption syndrome

Ministry of Health Notice

Please be advised that the Ministry of Health allows for only one baseline bone mineral density (BMD) test for screening purposes. Subsequent BMD imaging is restricted to one scan every 36 months with the next BMD scan after 60 months.

Please be advised that if you have had any BMD testing within the last 36 months you are directly responsible for the cost of the BMD test. If you are currently being treated for osteoporosis, osteopenia or fall into a high-risk category, BMD imaging is restricted to one study every 12 months.

DEXA Total Body Composition Scanning

Merivale Medical Imaging is now performing DEXA Total Body Composition scans. This is considered the gold standard for measuring fat tissue mass, lean tissue mass and bone mineral content; it also provides numbers for visceral adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue, resting metabolic rate, relative skeletal muscle index. These measurements can be used to develop more effective workout routines, diets or to track your fitness progress. The procedure uses minimal radiation (x-rays). You will receive a print out of these results including the graphs. Results are not discussed with the technologist.

We no longer require a requisition to perform DEXA Total Body Composition scanning. If you would like to have this procedure performed, please call our booking office to schedule your appointment.

This procedure is not insurable through OHIP and the client will be responsible for the associated fee of $175.  Please visit our FAQ page for more information.
